RANGER'S "KATE" TRULY "WUNDERBAR"

The exciting and unique world of William Shakespeare set to music came alive on July 24 to as the Ranger Playhouse presented "Kiss Me Kate." The popular Cole Porter musical was originally slated as the Counselor show last summer, and it's overdue arrival was greeted enthusiastically.
"Taming of the Shrew " provides the story and tempo of "Kiss Me Kate." The show concerns a group of actors in the midst of producing a musical version of Shakespeare comedy. Producing and starring in the show are a couple who are divorced for one year and as the play progresses find out that they are still in love. Their gradual settlement, a second love story involving two other members of the cast, and a comic undertone of gangsters provide the plot of "Kiss Me Kate."
Much of the story, was, of course, cut from the original show that the effectiveness of the play was not reduced. In the roles of Fred Graham and Lilli Vanessi were David Lapidus and Linda Tobin. Linda stepped into the part less than two days before the performance and she did a top quality job. In the supporting roles were Lois and Bill Calhoun played by Sue Falk and Barry Goldstein. Steve Lipsky and Charlie Bengaloff provided plenty of laughs as the bungling gangsters. The highlight of the show is when the two gangsters sang "Brush up your Shakespeare." All of the musical numbers were presented well to their beauty, charm and wit. From the haunting ballad "So in Love," to the bouncy "Always true to you darling in my fashion," "Another opening another show" and "Too Darn Hot," the evening was, at the very least, a tuneful one.
William Shakespeare, no doubt, hardly ever suspected that any of his works would some day appear on Broadway in a musical form. Nevertheless, he would have been pleased with the play "Kiss Me Kate" and the way Ranger Playhouse presented it.
